This quarter was a challenging and busy time for the rescue. More than X dogs came to the rescue in need of a home, one of the busiest times on record. The ongoing recovery, after the fire in January, made it that much more difficult to house and place the dogs. Judy and a small team of volunteers worked quickly to get the dogs the veterinary care and shelter they needed with a goal to adopt out dogs as quickly as possible to loving homes.
There was a large influx of puppies to the rescue from area puppy mills. During the pandemic, pet adoption and breeder sales soared while families hunkered down in their homes. People especially wanted furry companions by their sides to help pass the time. Post-Covid, more people are going back to work at the office and spending more of their free time traveling; thus the demand for new puppies has dropped greatly. In fact, some of the now-grown Covid era pups are now being surrendered because of their owner’s changing priorities. Puppy mills have been slow to realize this and are still mass-breeding dogs despite the shrinking demand.
